Agenda:
I. SOLINET Agreement
SOLINET CLP
Discussion on benefits of consortial agreements with vendors
Carrie will be attending the Charleston conference and will be available to discuss things there, she will also email Rob, Randy & Nancy Harris with these questions
- Can we set a time limit on the CLP agreement? 2-year?
- Can individual libraries pursue deals if we do not like the consortial deal?
- Can results be available by June 2009 Summit?
- What is the start date of the agreement?
- How soon will drafts of the agreement be available?
- When will the survey begin?
- To whom will SOLINET reveal our information?
- Can you elaborate on the significance and benefits of the survey?
- Can you clarify this sentence: "In addition, FoKAL members may move their non-FoKAL database subscriptions to SOLINET for maintenance and management." Is there an associated fee?
We are looking to save 1) time and 2) money and will assess this after 2 years
Concerns about sharing pricing of current database subscriptions
All FoKAL schools are a part of KYVL
We have lots of questions, but no 'deal-breakers' so let's pursue it
Once the agreement is received the Executive Committee will vote on it and then John will sign it if decided
II. Advocacy sub-committee
John - AIKCU will have a meeting 11/3 at 3pm to figure out how to lobby for KYVL and how to use the lobbyist to our advantage, any case can be stronger if there are more libraries in support of it (academic, public, school, etc.); Can CPE protect the KYVL budget? Carrie - The state will pay more if institutions have to pay individually, there could be a serious loss of KYVL if there is no unified voice
Carrie - All libraries: state, academic, school, etc. should join together so this should not just be FoKAL advocacy, yet broader than that
John - could not afford a database without KYVL
Sheree - are there any other constituencies (public, school, etc.) out there that also had to pick up databases individually?
John - the focus should be on where tax dollars are spent because legislators may/may not care about private institutions' expenses
Carrie - instead of focusing on money/numbers can we say what has affected our communities; Is there a brochure that we can create? A brochure should emphasize the importance of KYVL and how libraries and KYVL together are essential for the citizens of our state. John - OhioLINK has an example of this (hard copy distributed); Can what was 'lost' be described in narrative terms to show the impact?
John - South Carolina academic libraries got cut 90%
John - can draft a letter and needs comments as to the significance of what was cut; Carrie - need Wayne and other important signatures, KLA President, SAALCK Chair, AIKCU Chair
Ilona - can we get people to 'sign' online or affirm the letter? Carrie - we can get a postcard sent; John - a blog may work to get a variety of personal experience; Sheree - will it be a monitored blog? Carrie - can we ask a question on our wiki? Jared - Here is a possibility: You can use Zoho Polls (http://polls.zoho.com/) for a quick survey. The best way to insert a survey is: 1) Click insert Plugin, 2) Chose 'PBwiki Magic' ---> 'html', 3) Paste the Zoho Polls html in the box and click preview, 4) Click OK
Carrie/Ilona - maybe the talk should be positive about what is there, many public libraries will not be able to afford if things are cut
Warren - we should also include Courrier Service instead of just databases
Sheree - if the letter goes to legislators, then there should be something brief about KYVL, what is the bottom line in $?
John - KYVL is the core that allows academic institutions to focus on their distinctives so cutting the core will take funds away from other programs
Elsie - it is a leveler for all students at all schools will have access to the same core resources: students at Morehead St. will have access to the same resources as UK and UofL
Carrie - can check with a staff member to see if a postcard could be drafted for our patrons to mail to their legislators
John - will send a message to the FoKAL listserve to be aware of what is happening
Ilona - should we do a "Save KYVL Day"?
John - we have 2 months to work on it to send in Jan.
Carrie - Feb. 5th is the poster day at the capitol where students present research, 5-6 per university
John - two letters: 1) to legislators, 2) CPE needs to know the importance of KYVL
Sheree - CPE did find another $60,000 or so, but some of the second tier was eliminated
John - do we need to get our Presidents/Provosts on board to communicate with CPE? Elsie - definitely
Sheree/Elsie - the good deals that KYVL made for this year are not applicable to next year
Carrie - do we need an advocacy subcommittee? John - what should we do? Carrie - willing to be subcommittee chair of the advocacy group
III. Celebrations
- We did save some databases
- We have full participation! 50 Academic Libraries
IV. Committees
